BIOL 306 Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Parallel Fiber, Brainstem, Motor Coordination
Document Summary
Classically found to be involved in motor system, e. g. fine motor control, coordination, etc. A brain structure you used all the time; contains 50% of neurons in the brain. Taking a slice through the cerebellum have many different types of neurons. Purkinje cells integrate input and send out information in the form of action potentials. 3 layer structure: molecular layer + purkinje layer + granule layer, repeated all across the cerebellum. Lead to the idea of the cerebellum as a neuronal machine, i. e. circuit is built with repetitive basic building blocks. Not entirely true there is variation across the brain variation/striping of expression shown with fluorescence. Not all cells are the same but we"ve only just started studying these differences. Vestibular ocular reflex (vor), e. g. jogging, you"re moving up and down but image isn"t shaking. For a long time, it"s been posited that cerebellum is also involved in higher cognitive function but role is still controversial.
