Document Summary

Behavior as a phenotype: behavior ecology is the study of fitness consequence of a behavior. If a behavior is linked to an environment, then may be an adaptation. ), consequences (survivorship, group formation: why, fitness benefits and costs, why different species achieve the same benefit in different ways, predict: importance in conservation, theories about development of a new behavior. Influence on evolution: feedback effects that change the course of evolution (e. g. acquiring new habitat), traits of the species. Problems in studying behavior: anthropomorphism : viewing animals as people. Can we know what animals want or is it just evolutionary hard wired e. g. mother chimpanzee raises branch to chase off leopard in the presence of her offspring. Need multiple test, changing the environmental setting and test the behavior again e. g. put on non-predatory animal stuffy and observe her reaction. Also, should we presume chimps mental state closer to human or closer to animals.
