Clas 203 - lecture 20 heroic myth: theseus and the myths of athens. Amphitryon is engaged to alcmena, daughter of electryon (king of mycenae)-raiders come and raid the cattle of electryon. Electryon and his sons and amphitryon go to defend cattle. During the defense, amphitryon accidentally kills electryon, and all the other men die too. Alcmena says that amphitryon now has the blood of her father on his hands and has to get revenge for her brothers. >has to get revenge for the death of her brothers. She won"t consummate the marriage until he does this. Alcmena goes to thebes and helps the king (this is how he purifies himself) >a female fox was there who was dangerous and damaging the livestock. >oracle had proclaimed that she could not be caught. >amphitryon has a friend that has a hound that catches everything it pursues. 2 contraries that coexist at the same time: paradox.
