Observing emotions behaviours and thoughts: intoxication, motor skills, injured, changes in breathing, voice tone, eye-contact, body language, appearance, attitude, hygiene, hallucinations, paranoid, aggressive behaviours, threatening confusion, mood affected. Ask them to start at 20 and count down by 3. (adapt the question based on math abilities: 0-2 errors ok, 3-4 errors mild, 5-7 errors moderate, 8-10 errors severe. Show that you care: open body language ignoring phone giving them your full attention responding/validating them sitting without obstacles between you and the client. You need to gain a clear understanding of the internal experience of the crisis as the client sees it. Show the client that you are listening. Don"t take notes during a crisis (take them at the end or only in specific scenarios [lots of things to remember [names etc. ]]) There should be no eating or drinking by the counselor. Why questions makes a client explain rather than expand.
