1) The crisis in french multiculturalism
1. Do you feel prepared to talk about the topics like religious extremism and terrorism to your
students? Why?
-Yes, students no matter what age, have the right to know what goes on in the world and must
face the reality we live in. We cannot keep them sheltered from what happens around them and
thus it is our job, as teachers, to inform them on the situations that occur in a way that will not
scare them but make them more knowledgeable.
2. What are the problems Muslims face in France?
France doesn't give a chance to Muslims to integrate into their society and recognize them as
equal individuals.
3. Why is being different a problem in French society? Do you think there is hint that
difference!means!deficiency?!
One in four people in France are Muslim. Yet, the french prohibit the Muslim’s to built Mosques
thus, to the French being different is a deficiency. The french don't take the Islam’s seriously and
treat them as an “invisibles”. Muslims are expected to integrate into the French culture as
France does not believe in multiculturalism. The French do not allow the Muslim’s the right to be
different as they want them to be more like them.
4. What are!the differences between France and Canada in terms of multiculturalism?
Canada is a country that is very multicultural and accepting of others. It allows the people the
freedom to their own religion, thoughts, values and beliefs. Whereas in France, the inequality
and the harsh treatment of the Muslim’s is very evident.
5. What can be the main causes of radicalization of French Muslims? !
They are afraid that the Muslim’s will take over their job positions (there are not many available
to begin with), the French want the Muslim’s to be more like them and to convert/integrate into
their society.
6. What do you think about!French!politician!Jean-Marie Le Pen's point!that French majority
should have a privileged position over!immigrants?!
I do not agree with Jean Marie’s point. It is not a country just for the French and the French
should not be able to control what the Muslim’s believe in. As a matter a fact he says that
because the French are the majority they should have the power but the if the Islam community
was in fact the majority, he would not have the same standpoint.
2) Doll test-
1. How did those kids internalize such a racial preference? Or what are the reasons behind it?
These kids know that there is a racial preference because white people are usually in “superior
positions” in the workforce, in terms of pay and on television in terms of which role they play.
2. How do you think racial stereotypes are created and reinforced?
These kids know that their is a presence for “whites” because of what they see around them and
what is portrayed as beautiful on social media. Growing up, they were not taught that whites are
superior, yet it is something that is socially constructed from experiences, social interactions and
the way in which we are treated as individuals within a society.
3. What is the 'norm' here?
The norm is that being white is “better” because white people are liked more and are seen as
dominant and superior.
4. How does!this 'norm' shape the self-conception of those kids?!
The white kids will ultimately grow up and feel as though they are superior to the inferior (black)
race because of what our norms in society have taught them.
5. What is the role of education in such a process?!
