What is a portfolio:
-ā€œA portfolio is systematic collection representative of a childā€™s work that the teacher and student select to
provide information regarding each childā€™s developmental readiness, learning proļ¬le, achievement levels,
and learning growth over timeā€
-A systematic collection ensures that portfolios develop with a purpose and continuously by establishing
what goes into a portfolio
-The products in a portfolio must be representative of the ways that is typical of the child
ā€”> representative products show patterns and trends in the childā€™s learning
-Both teacher and child selected products are incorporated
-Teachers choose items that will document learning standards and achievement
-As children become more familiar with their portfolios, some products are child selected to individualize
the portfolio
-Childrenā€™s learning proļ¬le and learning grow over time - many children are motivated to excel when they
see themselves that they are making progress and their work is resulting in success
-The goal of the portfolio is to be educationally effective and personally satisfying for everyone involved
Portfolio objectives:
-Develop and expand as children mature
-Pre-K to K : the process involves children collecting and managing a representative sample of work to
document achievements and celebrate their learning
-Grade 1 to 3: the intent is to expand the portfolio process and increase studentsā€™ involvement and
responsibilities
Pre K to K:
1. Develop students feelings of self worth
2. Use reported tasks to document each childā€™s level of learning standards, growth and achievements
3. Document learning and determine effective instructional accommodations
4. Celebrate leanring
Grade 1-3:
1. Develop studentsā€™ feelings of self worth
2. Teach young children to manage, organize, and ļ¬le their portfolio products
3. Increase childrenā€™s responsibility for learning
4. Use repeated tasks to document each childā€™s level of learning standards, growth and achievements
5. Document readiness levels and determine leaning goals
