Genesis 1-3
What is the temperature of the beginning of creation? -273 C, 0 kalvin. It was
very cold because there was no sunlight.
Issue between story of creation and evolution.
Text reflects a situation where people were discussing and thinking about
creation. Has a lot to do with interpretation and reading between the lines.
Issue of feminism in the text: Adam should rule over Eve. Maybe God foresaw
how society would function. Also men and women have different roles.
There are both pro and against women texts in the Bible.
Society has shaped our view of the Bible. The kind of fruit (apple) was never
actually specified. Artists interpreted it according to their culture (in the west
apples were common).
“In the beginning” – when there was nothing except God himself. First there
is nothing and then there is creation. This view doesn’t fit with evolution.
“In the beginning” can also mean that there was stuff but the stuff had no
form. This fits more with the idea of evolution.
It can also mean the beginning of a new period.. a period where time is kept.
God creates something before the beginning- there is a reference that God
was not alone when he was creating the world. Who is this “I” being who is
next to God before the beginning? It was wisdom.
1:26 And God said, 'Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness, and
let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over
the beasts and over all the earth, and over every moving thing that moves upon
the earth.' And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He
created him, male and female He created them. And God blessed them and God
said, 'Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and rule over the
fish of the sea and the birds of the heavens and over all life that moves upon the
earth.
Wisdom was created before the beginning of all the rest. Wisdom is
portrayed as a woman. God is portrayed as a man. Wisdom is a kind of
master plan of creation. He looked to his master plan to figure out how to
create man and everything in the world. With the help of wisdom everything
to form.
This is the beginning of ancient Israel.
The relationship between God and wisdom is everlasting. God always looks
back to his master plan. His master plan isn’t full-proof- eve eats the fruit.
Things can go wrong.
Before the beginning there was formlessness, darkness.
