RELG 271 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Moral Authority, Lady Gaga, Human Sexuality

22 views4 pages
-Scientia sexualis
-Confession - most highly valued techniques for producing truth: receiving information from a
master/the person who has mastered the art
-Confessor is also subject statement: disciple is confessing their truth (what they have done).
Speaker is the authority here instead of the master.
-Agency of domination is in the one who listens, rather than speaks
-Reconstruction: speaking the truth but the authority is the one who hears it. The disciple is
reconstructing it.
-ā€œBreaking with traditions of theā€¦ā€
-Confessional science - preserved in modern culture. Confession became aligned with
examination (law, medicine gave us ways to think about this).
-Shifts in history: this movement where truth that is something that is passed from master to
disciple. Truth is now examined through inspection, examination.
-We extract a lot of truth from popular culture: ex. born this way by lady gaga (about
modiļ¬cation. Not actually born the way she looks in the video). What she means by this is that
you are born the way you are and you have the freedom to express that. Idea that we were born
to amend nature and make changes.
**-Key assumptions of social constructivism (Vivian Burr): giving some space for objectivity
-Critical stance
-Historically and culturally speciļ¬c
-Knowledge of the world is intersubjectively fabricated not objectively observed: We deal with
reality by interpreting/fabricating it
-Constructions are bound up with particular power relations
-Sexuality and the cultivation of humanity
*-Social construction- a lot of what we know about ourselves and the world is learned and
conditioned within us (natural foundation). Not given within our biological makeup, have to learn
it.
-Deep concern: education has become all about the test (getting a grade and the degree that
goes with it which eventually leads to a job..)
-Concerned that by not being reļ¬‚ective in our education and human sexuality that we will end up
with a historic, manly citizen
-Education for democratic citizenship
ā€”> Problem of unreļ¬‚ective citizen: patriarchal notion. She wants people to be informed and not
ignorant when making choices.
ā€”> Goal of informed (not ignorant) choice
-Social construction
ā€”> Learning is socially shaped
ā€”> Emotions entail a good deal of learning
-Addresses problematic suspicion of sex research
-Areas of social construction (emotions are socially shaped)
1) Behaviour - societies share norms of behaviour
2) Norms
a) Norms about sexuality itself that shape experience (e.g., appetite)
b) Norms about evaluations within the category (e.g., what is desirable in a partner)
3) Categories - basic sexual categories undergo social shaping
4) Placement of individuals within the categories - maleness and femaleness linked to biological
markers; not heterosexuality and homosexuality ?
-Theres much about life in society that is conditioned and socially learned.
