*-Social construction- a lot of what we know about ourselves and the world is learned and
conditioned within us (natural foundation). Not given within our biological makeup, have to learn
it.
-Deep concern: education has become all about the test (getting a grade and the degree that
goes with it which eventually leads to a job..)
-Concerned that by not being reļ¬ective in our education and human sexuality that we will end up
with a historic, manly citizen
-Education for democratic citizenship
ā> Problem of unreļ¬ective citizen: patriarchal notion. She wants people to be informed and not
ignorant when making choices.
ā> Goal of informed (not ignorant) choice
-Social construction
ā> Learning is socially shaped
ā> Emotions entail a good deal of learning
-Addresses problematic suspicion of sex research
-Areas of social construction (emotions are socially shaped)
1) Behaviour - societies share norms of behaviour
2) Norms
a) Norms about sexuality itself that shape experience (e.g., appetite)
b) Norms about evaluations within the category (e.g., what is desirable in a partner)
3) Categories - basic sexual categories undergo social shaping
4) Placement of individuals within the categories - maleness and femaleness linked to biological
markers; not heterosexuality and homosexuality ?
-Theres much about life in society that is conditioned and socially learned.
