Extra cells form a mass of tissue called a growth or a tumor. Do not spread & are usually non life-threatening. Invade neighboring tissue and spread to other parts of body (metastasis) There are at least 30 different types of cancer. 2nd leading cause of death in us in 2009 (45% male & 38% female over lifetime) Only 10-15% of cancers are linked to heredity (most are due to external factors) Globally, approximately 7. 6 million deaths are due to cancer/year & expected to rise. *proportion of deaths: 30% malignant cancer/20% heart disease/25% others. More men die from cancer (mainly because of smoking) ***cancer associated with age.
