"elegy written in a country churchyard" -- thomas gray. Lines of iambic pentameter, written in quatrain with abab rhyme. Iambic pentameter = meter of gravity, it is what broke the sing-song ballad meter. Theorist"s of meter in english declare this that resists the ballad"s rhythm. Appropriate for the elegy as it is serious/ grave. Stanza 1: begin with setting -- a landscape. A gloomy setting conveyed with "darkness," the colour grey. Twilight, a gloomy time, person speaking about death to create a dark setting: darkness = symbolic of death.
