Free verse [associated with walt whitman] encouraged poets to experiment with meter. Sprung rhythm: accentual meter developed by gerard manley hopkins, a foot in this system has one stressed syllable, then any number of unstressed/ lighter stressed. Hopkins is springing open the six conventional feet to numerous possibilities. Invented a new kind of meter that sounds free, although still has a pattern. First line appears to be iambic begins with convention. Second line uses excessive and powerful amount of d 7 stresses within the line. This poem bursts out of constraints of iambic pentameter. Creates a sense of muscular, movement, thrusting, associated with moving of an animal. Line 8 & line 10: use of exclamation marks.
