Common sense: the mona lisa is a physical object, a thing. the mona lisa is a painting in the louvre. But the painting in the louvre is the first token, the original token of the mona lisa. The primary token has some kind of historical features that other things don"t have. There is some kind of historical priority about the louvre one that is interpretively relevant. The first instantiation of the mona lisa has properties that subsequent instantiations don"t have. In relation to the work, the destruction of a particular physical thing does not mean the destruction of the work. For example, if the mona lisa in the louvre was to be destroyed, it wouldn"t mean that the mona lisa disappeared. Only the first instantiation of the mona lisa would be destroyed. For sibley, the mona lisa is not one physical object, it is a vat (visual appearance type). The mona lisa is not essentially different from something like hamlet.
