Characters are knights errant, wander all over the place, and the story does too. Errant suggests the knights can err, make mistakes and get lost. This complex structure, challenges us as readers. Spencer claims he"s writing an allegory, a dark conceit. Everything means something else - a hidden meaning to search for. In the fairy queen, nothing is what it seems. Things that are beautiful are evil ugly and dangerous. Castles/houses, where knights go to for refuge, are actually traps. Disarmed in that they are caught off guard. In spencer it"s always dangerous for the knights to stop wandering, rest somewhere, stop questing - because they let their guard down. They don"t sleep very well, in canto 4, where arthur is up all night kept awake by fear of danger and love. Stanza 61 - with heavy look and lumpish pace. You have to be vigilant and on guard all the time.
