•Pentateuch (also known as the Torah) = the first 5 books in the Bible
-Traditionally, Moses is said to have written them, but later scholars suggest that
they are the product of several authors
-
Documentary Hypothesis
-There are 2 voices that refer to God:
•E = Elohist (God as Elohim)
•Y = Yahwist ( God as Yahweh)
There are also two other voices (one of them being the P=priestly voice, but the focus is
more on the E and the Y)
Genesis - the Primeval History
-Chapter 1 > Elohim
•A less familiar God
•With Adam > Yahweh : a more intimate, more familiar God
-The Documentary Hypothesis: it is not Moses who wrote all 5 books, but there are
different veins through those books that refer to God from different points of view
(POV).
•i.e. the book of Genesis refers to God in both the E voice and the Y voice, and
even refers to him using the P voice)
Enuma Elish
