Famous for writing the novel, the colour purple. Growing up in the rural south and then going into the city environment and she writes about her movement away from her family and roots. Self- exploration and escape from the rural background. Private history: family history/ domestic vs/ social/ collective/ Political history: 921: the limited front yard (remember gwendolyn brooks) The brooks poem: odd containment and contrapment from seeing people pass on the street, and the speaker has this aspiration to join those people, but she can"t easily do it. The difference is that this yard is its private property, where the space is in- between the inside and the outside. More comfortable, not just a yard but like an extended living room: 921: the tv room. Talks show tv programs where couples are reunited. American dream: liberal reform agenda that became a way of encountering racism within society. This daughter is living in a glamorous, televisual world.
