ENGL 277 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Verisimilitude, Indexicality, Diegesis
Document Summary
Forms of realism : verisimilitude: realism of appearances, indexicality: the existential bond between a photographic representation and its subject ** important. Nickels: the sticky stuff the actual material trace of what can only happen once. The way that the camera produces a foot print of the events or objects that are in front of it. Through a chemical process, film makes a mark, testifies the existence or the presence of the thing recorded. Difference between a drawing/painting vs photograph or film. Indexicality: tells just this individual once was alive and in front of the camera. Camera represents a sense of of truth because of the indexicality. Clip 1: very mysterious, reality of the situation, camera showing close ups, given very specific information, specific angles, music: non-diegetic music. Clip 2: milk shake at crime scene, women cop couldn"t remember the license plate, still question of what we think we know but more context than the first reenactment.
