Document Summary

(ln) the two gentlemen of verona - (01/05/2015) (l2) Shakespeare wrote a lot of poetry early in his life - later, a lot more prose. He wrote all his poetry in iambic pentameter. Difficult to understand what is being said sometimes - audiences would go to listen to the language, challenged by the poetry. Shakespeare helps out by reiterating, but audience likes to be befuddled sometimes. Back then, the art form was expressed through poetry. Now, we have other mediums, like films, songs to perform. But in this era, this is the main art that people are most interested in. Recall that shakespeare would have learned latin in grade school. In latin, how we speak are fundamentally different. In english we use syntax - word order tells us how the words are operating in the sentence. The boy loves the girl; the girl loves the boy. But in latin, word order isn"t important: instead, it"s the word ending.
