Document Summary

Richard crowned young - 10 years old. Richard commissioned works by influential writers - so an artistic atmosphere, highlights of medieval writing. Shakespeare highlights these aspects - the artistic qualities of him, his language rather than his warlike qualities (compared to bolingbroke). Because of this, critics have often put richard as more a master of words, of art, really invested in the idea of ceremony, whereas bolingbroke is more about action - more related to every day life. Along with love of ceremony and language, he"s portrayed as talking too much in a meaningless way. This love of ceremony and being king may go handing hand. All the king"s markers, sceptres, crowns - they"re metaphors for the king"s power, and in themselves they are just things. This is one facet of his portrayal, which is somewhat a valid interpretation, making him, to a degree, an ineffectual ruler - he can"t do as much.
