A weekend retreat for environmental education and appreciation. Somewhat spiritual; participants are meant to develop a land ethic. Ecologically illiterate society must learn to preserve and protect nature, get involved in community, and see habitat in a different way. Conservation is taught and spread when participants return home. Lots of teachers bring the lessons into their classrooms, who embrace the topic. Not a medical diagnoses, but describes disconnect between children and nature. Stop talking as if the end of the world is near. We don"t want to give our children a post-apocalyptic vision of the future. Sets children up to associate nature with fear and destruction. Plant native species in yards to bring back biodiversity like birds and butterflies. Test scores and family bonding improve with contact to nature. Parents and teachers can have a significant impact on children"s worldviews.
