ENVR 200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 34: Westphalian Sovereignty, Polar Stratospheric Cloud, Tropospheric Ozone
Document Summary
Powerful oxidizer, very reactive(not wanted near ground level) Produced by interaction of oxygen and uv light. Ozone is formed and destroyed by uv radiation (sun) Perturbation by pollutants (cfcs, halons containing f, cl, br. Cfc + (uv) cl + stuff, cl react with ozone as a catalyst. Ozone destruction: easier in liquid or solid (contact longer) Extremely cold conditions; polar stratospheric clouds of ice and sulfuric acid form; Cfcs sit on cloud droplets, but do not react because of lack of light; Circumpolar air circulation limits exchanges with the rest of the atmosphere. Light comes back; rapid destruction of ozone occurs. T goes up, circumpolar circulation dissolves and the ozone hole vanishes. Residence time of cfcs and clo in stratosphere, ozone hole disappear in several decades. Primarily a result of combustion(harmful gases and aerosols) No3 production diffuse: greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Health; economics; environmental quality; other species and ecoysystems.
