EPSC 181 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Ocean Current, Cool Air, 2Degrees
Document Summary
The equator and poles are believed to have more extreme weather than they really have. There is the transport of heat by the atmosphere and oceans. Moving heat from the equator to the poles so that the equator is less warm and the poles are less cold. Warm moist equatorial air rises and moves towards the poled, leading to cloud formation. There is sinking motion at about 30 degrees latitude in both hemispheres -> sunny and dry areas. As air is moving around, it cools down. Because the air cools down, it subsides (sinks) because it has lost its density. Jupiter rotates much faster: more cells than earth. Has 4-6 cells because it"s spinning so much faster. As air is moving north and south, it curves because the earth is rotating too fast. The surface winds are pushing the air east to west. Rising air equals low pressure and the reverse.
