If there"s interaction with groundwater, then there"s the possibility of polluting the water. Petroleum is composed of oil (liquid hydrocarbons) and natural gas (made mostly of methane) Oil needs to be concentrated from its source rock into a reservoir before it is economically extractable. Back then, we were able to make an artesian well but with oil. C and h are stored in organisms as they grow (e. g. , by photosynthesis) After they die, if organisms remain at the surface, contact with air leads to oxidation and decay, and c and h are lost to the atmosphere.
