Since occupy new niches then the organisms that replaced extinct ones can evolve or have similar traits to live in the same niche (so can share traits but diff species) Look for these traits in the fossil records. Appears not to be that abundant during the mesozoic, small and big eyes so nocturnal. Needed to be able to hide from the dinosaurs. Mammals were well adapted to fill the empty niches. Divergence before the k/t but poor records in fossils. Looking at fossils can help us build models to know how organisms functioned.
