Document Summary

Universal transverse mercator (utm), based on the mercator projection: An international grid system that covers the earth"s surface between 84 n and 80 s. the earth is divided into 60 north-south zones, each of which is. The zones are numbered from 1 to 60 eastward, beginning at the 180th meridian. Each slice is subdivided into zones of 8 degrees latitude denoted by letters from south to north. A grid system is superimposed on the zones, and separate transverse. Mercator projections are centered on each zone. i. ii. Each utm zone (e. g. ,18t) is further subdivided into a 1000 m grid of eastings and northings. Example: easting 916, then northing 944, therefore the location is 916944 b. How latitude and longitude are determined: latitude (distance from equator) first, longitude (distance from prime meridian) second (usually expressed in degrees, minutes, seconds n-s, e-w) By convention, maps are always drawn with the same orientation north at the top of the page.
