Dawson city sits on a floodplane every building is at an angle because permafrost is melting at one corner b/c that"s where the woodstove was. Thermokarst process and landforms associated with ground subsidence of thawing permafrost. The ground gets so cold that the ice cracks. Excess ice: volume of ice in excess of saturation of the soil. The dynamic interaction between permafrost and ground water flow (saturated) produces a separate class of permafrost landforms called frost mounds. Frost mounds can be either perennial (form slowly over many years) or seasonal (for during a single winter season but may remain for more than one year) Pingos (types of frost mound) continuous permafrost.
