5. WORLD AGRICULTURE TRADE
most crops dont move beyond national boundaries, because theyr bulky and
perishable.
agriculture trade is limited by tariffs, quotas and quality standards. food markets are
very protected, because we are concerned with food security and farmers well-being.
agriculture is protected.
heavy subsidization of domestic agriculture in industrialized countries (over
protection)
underinv. in dev.ing. countries (= underproduction)
freer trade in agricultural commodities
New chapter:
THE GLOBAL LAND RUSH
media tension; slide graph
why are countries and firms buying up land? another country will buy land in another
country and then lease it to the farmer. the farmer gets a stable income and the buyer
gets some type of income from agriculture (+ form of control on country)
what is the difference now?
size and frequency
new players (China. Malaysia, UAE, India)
disillusionment with smallholder farming ; east europe
vertical integration of agribusiness ; involved in the whole value chain. land is
then a strategic resource.
new crops: biofuels and new carbon forest (tic plantation in panama), they
tend to need dynamics because u need a lot of space and planning very fast
to have effect v fast.

high food prices; the golf was very pre-occupied
competing land uses
low returns on other investments. these days its harder to find investment thats fixed.
in the bank return rates are super low (1%) and the stock market is volatile and not
safe
land as a good investment
traditionally a hedge against inflation
