Document Summary

Rain out vs. wash out don"t need to know distinction between the two. Both are mechanisms for removal by precipitation processes. Don"t need to know mathematical formulas e. g. don"t need to know how to calculate surface energy balance, but need to know what surface energy balance is. Don"t need to know how to calculate a daly but know what they are. Formation of hurricanes (energy being exchanged, wind speed greater towards the center): Warm tropical waters means energy is available from the atmosphere, coming from sensible heat (heat we can sense) and evaporation of water (abundant sunlight changes state of matter liquid to gas aka evaporation) Water evaporates into the atmosphere, energy that goes into changing state gets bound up in the molecules and creates latent heat. Parcel of air enriched in warm, moist air cools as it moves up and condenses, creating droplets (a cloud). Condensation releases the latent heat into the atmosphere as sensible heat.
