Topographic maps are simple three-dimensional presentation of a portion of the earth"s surface. However, the graphic presentation of elevation, relief and topographic information (data) is rather difficult. elevation refers to the absolute height of a land surface, and is generally expressed as some distance above (or below) mean sea level (m. asl) This slide looks at the basic concepts. Contour lines connect a series of points of equal elevation and are used to illustrate topography, or relief, on a map. They show the height of ground above mean sea level (m. s. l. ) in either feet or metres and can be drawn at any desired interval.
