Document Summary
Lecture 19 - the spanish civil war: 1936-1939. The king alfonso xiii made the fateful decision to endorse the new government, under primo de rivera. Promises of the republic: modernity and social justice. Landless laborers of the south: for agrarian reform: huge estates, debt labor. Industrial and service workers: better wages and union rights: barcelona, basque country (bilbao) have very high populations and are industry oriented, workers had lost respect for parliamentary procedure and had turned to trade-union movements. Recognition of claims for autonomy of the historic regions e. g. catalonia and basque country (euskadi) For supporters in general it meant power to the majority rather than the old "notables" and governing cliques. For radical sections of the left it was the first stage in a social revolution. Conservative military officers: fear that autonomy would break-up spain"s territorial integrity. Catholic church: feared laicizing reforms and the destruction of their influence over society which would open the door to freethinkers, protestants, atheists.
