HIST 193 Lecture 2: Summary Notes (2)
Document Summary
Modern history sourcebook: david hume: of the dignity or meanness of human nature. The main idea in this piece is that humans have a naturally pre-disposed nature to be good people and to reason things out, yet we still manage to somehow argue that we don"t know why we do things. His first point is that there are many things influencing us, like comparison and that can fix our human nature more than fate can. David goes on to explore this in many different ways throughout the essay. That we have to go beyond comparison and controversy, in all things. That we have to stop comparing humans to other things, when really all we can compare humans to is other humans. The second point is that we make unfair representations of the case and we rely upon using the weakness of human nature as a scapegoat.
