In 1848, responsible government was established (by lord durham"s suggestions) Before 1848 there was a powerful tory movement to maintain strong ties to the uk. However reformists began to gain power through different tracks. Many fought for responsible government (elected assembly to which executive responds) Led to a political realignment of the reform movement. Lower canadian reformers partnered with upper canadian conservatives in the 1850s. Radical reformers rose in the 1850s because their initial goal had been met. Parti rouge: universal suffrage, separate church and state, education for the population, looked to the us as a model of sorts, never strong. Clear grits: voluntaryism (separation of church and state with parochial functions privately funded on a voluntary basis), annexation of the west, rep by pop (1857), suffrage, non denominational schools, more popular in canada west, urban commercial interests and farmers. George brown went from unhappy with clear grits to their leader.
