Spanish traders exchanged in china for porcelain, silver, etc. i. e. traded with other europeans to pay for armies. Influx of silver led to europe-wide price inflation which impoverished spanish who were already weighed down by taxes: weakened power by 1700, never recovered a dominant position in world affairs again. Netherlands/new amsterdam (new york from 1664) and brazilian adventure short-lived. India major component of first british empire: 1583, newfoundland, 1783, uk lost american war for independence. In 18th century, value of sugar was greater than the value of imports of india/china combined. India and the caribbean = big facets of british empire : for north american conquests, (see slideshow 3 page 13/17) Pacific ocean: allowed great deal of autonomy to subject peoples, large number of muslims conquered were not forced to be orthodox. Christians nor to abandon their culture: this prevented rebellion and conflict, peter the great re-oriented the country"s focus towards the west.
