The great war and the end of empires. When did the 19th century end: 1914. The concepts of the long 19th century and short 20th century: change of european state, fall of powers, 1500 european powers controlled 7% of the globe"s land. Scramble for africa was to cause much conflict. Established between 1873-1890 by german chancellor bismarck, ties all european power in some form of alliance. After bismarck"s fall, under william ii, alliance system crumbles and if gradually replaced by two entering diplomatic alliances: germany, Austria-hungary vs. france and russia, and from 1904 great britain. Colonization took place for the sake of colonization (scramble for. 1/ greece, serbia, montenegro and bulgaria against ottoman empire. Rationing became a wide phenomenon: the black market. Revolutions changed the balance of war - after bolshevik take over russia pulled out, smaller revolutions in hungary and germany followed, which also changed the dynamic of the last months of the war.
