Gender (the social and hierarchical construction of the differences between the sexes) now must be studied as part of the historical profession. Trad jewish society v much divided by gender. Relig roles--only men obligated to perform all torah commandments. Only men can learn torah, become rabbis. Thought that women who learned the torah would become. Cult of domesticity--women learn practical knowledge of the home. Economic roles--women active in econ, largely via husband"s affairs, but some independently. Political roles--women really had no rights in poli world, can"t participate at all. Agunah--thee chained/anchored women--woman who is denied a divorce by husband. Gender and class in 19th century western europe. Bildung/cult of domesticity--home was protector of morality, women"s job to create peaceful domestic environments. Idea that women can solve the ills of society. Women getting involved in society thru social work (and nursing, elementary education)--seen as extension of motherhood.
