Lecture 9 - modern medicine: the clinical revolution. The purpose of the old hospital was not medical, it was for welfare. Among them were sick people but that was not the main purpose. There were thousands of hospitals and they were big. Hotel dieu was run by religious orders or hopital general was run by the state and this happened even before the revolution. Hospitals run by the state still had employees that were from the religious orders. Purpose was to provide care and exercise a custodial role. Took endangered out of society (criminals and those who were considered insane - socially deviant populations) Radical rejection of the past that was based on enlightenment ideas - rejection of traditional priviledge. Put the enlightenment ideas into practice - got rid of the kind and aristocracy along with the catholic church being disenfranchised.
