The first movement towards independence, people don"t support it in spanish america; first attempt of a coup is in 1806 by francisco miranda (been in the us and france during the revolutions); sought to revolutionise government. Cabildos abierto set up in caracas; most were royalists at first but in 1811 they get rid of all the real royalists and establish the independent caracas on liberal principles. This is while ferdinand is not on the throne. Port in southern spain, direct relations to spanish america. As a resistance to napoleon the national assembly (cortes) meets there to write a constitution constitutional monarchy; written in 1810, signed in 1812; spanish. The problem: american representatives were liberal white creoles (francisco miranda); most spaniards didn"t want to give the colonies too much of a voice; systematically block all their demands creates a lot of tension.
