Most of aegean islands left 2 greece. Christians in oe go to greece, muslims in greece go to turkey. Will not take possessions (land, houses, etc), incoming populations will take. But 1. 5 greeks sent from turkey vs 750,000 from greeks. Turkey also had more resources and power after end of greco-turkish war. Another prob--not every greek spoke greek and vice versa for muslims/turkish. Christians living in this region were turkish-speaking. Were villages w little incorporation into greek culture/nationalism. Hadn"t experienced much hardship during the war. Same situation for muslims in western thrace. These muslims had not suffered in bws. V densely populated region, equal greek orth/muslim pops. Born in espiye--in 1900 was v small village of 300. Every year, big festival--both go and muslim communities joined. Both religs would pray to whatever figure was being celebrated-- wanted help from wherever it could come. Yts want to settle refugees in vacant houses of go who are away working in russia.
