After suppression of croatian spring, tito tightens central authority. Croatia could keep more foreign currency, got more econ autonomy. Repubs/provs got virtual veto power in some areas. Parli goes from 5 to 2 chambers. Collective presidency--9 members, tito was pres of pres. 1975 crackdown by suppression of praxis journal. In some ways, tito was the last habsburg, v much acted as a monarch. Problem of finding a successor for tito. Tito"s power/prestige could solve many problems, he was a v pragmatic/effective leader. No obvious successor, most of tito"s contemporaries died in 70"s. After tito"s death, president of the presidency was set to rotate btwn other 8 members--similar re: party. Tito"s death causes great wave of national mourning. Succession was peaceful/orderly, as previously arranged--worked this way for a decade. Not just a crisis of leadership but of ideology. Cult of tito stood in for him, even after death. 1986--begin to see first attempts at revisionist memory of tito.
