Visit to kosovo protested--police suppressed but milosevic defended their right to demonstrate. Demands for kosovo to b/come repub resurface. Kosovo v poor--econ discontent fed poli discontent. Massive emigration out of kosovo, pop b/comes 90% albanian. Those who left claimed they faced discrimination/violence. Murder (of 4)/suicide by albanian furthered nationalist rhetoric. Milosevic took de facto control of of serbian party/purged communist party of reformers. Consolidated party by evoking nationalism--sought recentralization thru/out yugoslavia. Organized mass protests accusing reformists of corruption. Accused other repub party leaders of not caring abt serbs. Led to some party purges of reformists. Conservatives then controlled serbia, voivodina, montenegro, kosovo--half of repub votes. Resistance from slovenia--b/gan standing up for albanians. Began negotiating w eu abt yugoslav membership. Polls indicated sppt for markovic in all repubs. Milosevic then tries to take over croatia, again using nationalism.
