Officers in yugoslav army purged, pro-serb military group, tv formed. Milosevic accuses students of being terrorists--met w opposition from radicals. Tho milosevic had gained sppt during war, defacto loss turned public opinion against him. He has seemingly lost serbian holy land (kosovo) 18 opp groups rally around lawyer vojislav kostunica, defender of human rights. Serbia media almost entirely under milosevic"s control. Things complicated by calls for boycott of pres election. Nonetheless, kostunica won plurality--howev did not win 50% so second round of voting was necessary. Howev, exit polls had him winning 55% Was expected that milosevic would falsify 2nd round, so opposition bgan demonstrations/general strike instead of accepting runoff. Police, army, paramilitaries bgan defecting to opposition. Milosevic did not meet opposition to concede defeat--4 hour revolt began. Protesters set parli/state tv buildings on fire, army refuses to intervene.
