Roughly 140,000 killed, 4 mil refugees (internal or external) No definite answer, violence not necessary and a product of political machinations. Nationalism a substitute for demising socialism--did certainly gain traction. Tito/cardell"s 1974 const and unworkable structure of bureaucratic govt. Complicated linguistic/border situation, more decentralized govt, democratization as a part of communism all contributed to deeper issues. Assigning guilt to individuals, not ethnic groups. Stable political syst until 2002, run by former communists. Moved to a market economy, but more gradually than really anywhere else. To the protests of world bank/imf, but slovenia is most successful of post- communist economies by most standards. Joined nato/eu in 2004, adopted euro in 2007. In some ways this ended econ success. Janez jansa elected president, then lost, then won again as leader of a coalition. Despite corruption charges--sparked another wave of protests. Howev, slovenia is among one of the least corrupt countries in the world, Croatia perhaps in part due to protests.
