The council of trent was not a very big affair. The popes tried to keep control over it. On the closure of the council in 1563, the fathers there, submitted all the decisions of the council for confirmation to the pope. They were making a statement about the ultimate authority of the pope which had been contested by protestants. There was a push with the jesuit order and the foundation of the propagation of the faith, which looked after the spread of. Young people also might run away and get married and the family wouldn"t be able to do anything about it. Protestants said that parental consent was necessary for marriage which reinforced the patriarchy. The council of trent introduced more stringent regulations to make marriage a more public affair.
