Revolt rippled across the country and were initially spearheaded by students and then brought in elders. A widespread series of strikes brought workers into the struggle. Struck in a way that became increasingly hard for the state to control. Government needed to realize they couldn"t control the workers movement. Organized by the south african student"s movement (sasm) Dispute about how much the students were influenced by black consciousness - many of them went to school in. Soweto and mobilized the symbols of black consciousness. They had been influenced by the congress movement - looking at liberation movements in exile. Coming together of a protest culture where the students are mobilizing across the country.
