Document Summary

Three different themes: (1) economics (2) media (3) racial component. Meant to introduce us to a theme that will get more prevalence/importance as the course goes on, Mobilization of all and that is the concept of total war . lives of citizens in belligerent countries. Militaries became increasingly mechanized, warfare became reliant on the use of airplanes and tanks, things that moved on their own power. So, everything consequently was dependent on industrial power. Each belligerent country had to mobilize their national economies, and restructure their industries in order to produce as many of these as possible. What was possible on the front lines was linked between how much the home front could produce. What"s ironic about this is that given the eventual outcome of the war, it was the axis powers who actually began with somewhat of a head start in terms of economic mobilization. When the war starts, we see various degrees of superiority for the axis.
