01/26--poets and power: the making of soviet yiddish literature. Chechnya, dagestan, ingushetia had all declared themselves independent states b4 oct rev. Bolsheviks then later take control and form 1 republic. Divide into 7 districts, each w own natl schools. Goal to create one written lang for chechens and ingush ppls. In 1920s, try to convert chechen script to latin. Not cyrillic bc of hist of chechen rebellion. Jews not forced to attend, but certainly harassed for not. Some jews thought that ussr was only place a yiddish speaking, secular jewish society could exist. Poland--young ppl increasingly speaking polish, govt seeks to repress minority langs. Important center of very brief independent ukrainian state. Allow quite a lot of autonomy for natl minorities, including jews. Receives state funding to develop yiddish culture. Believed that basis of modern/secular jewish identity was yiddish. State offers money to write what it wants written. Given poor econ state, many yiddish writers find this enticing.
