Some argue that jews are essentially nonviolent, and despite the fact that zionism often called on jews to take up arms, they would somehow avoid nationalist violence. After all, jews themselves were perennial victims of such violence. Yet, when jews evict palestinians from their land, threat of violence is there. On the other side, palestinians occasionally kill jewish settlers. So violence is a present threat in ottoman palestine. Initially, jews hired palestinians to guard their settlements. This changed with socialist zionist idea that jews should not hire palestinians.
