Topics today: building words, compounding, affixation, other ways, ablaut, suppletion, stress shift, reduplication, summary. Building words: compounds, contain two or more roots, ex. Feature percolation: way of thinking about properties of the head (cid:498)floating up(cid:499) to the top of the tree (percolating up, the head determines the category of the compound. Sometimes compounds seem like phrases: compound word or syntactic phrase, compound word, the teacher wrote on the black board, syntactic phrase, the black board is in better shape than the brown one. Endocentric: the head identifies the general class of meaning of the whole word, (cid:498)treehouse,(cid:499) (cid:498)caveman(cid:499, plurals, pluralize the head, sometimes regular, wisdom tooth, wisdom teeth. Exocentric: the meaning is not determined from the parts, (cid:498)bookworm(cid:499, plurals: Inflectional affairs: mark things like tense and number, doesn"t change syntactic category, adjust meaning slightly. Building unreachable: morphologically complex, built in steps, reflects a hierarchical organization. Interleave morphemes instead of putting theme end to end.
