Document Summary

Orderly heterogeneity: the kind of variation that labov observed when he focused on doing a systematic study of how linguistic elements vary in a speech community. Contrary to the preexisting belief that such variation would be unsystematic. His findings showed regular systematic patterns, which helped to explain how, and why such variation arises. Refers to the fact that no one speaks the same. Vernacular speech: the most natural kind of speech. There is a homogeneous adaption of increasing attention to speech across socioeconomic class. When speech gets more formal, you reduce your use of (-in") and increase your use of (-ing) no matter which social class you are from. The only way we can get people to speak in a more casual way than normal speech is to get them to speak of a personal experience. Channel cues: nonlinguistic aspects of speech that give us some cue as to the emotional state of the speaker.
