What you can learn in any potential l2 is limited/modified by what is in your l1. This is not only apparently true if you look at the data, but it"s also desirable, because of continuity. You want children to just be simpler versions of adults; you don"t want them to be unique. Some phonological processes seem to be unique to children. We talked about consonantal harmony, becoming something like [kl]. fusion in weird" segments - eg, two segments. There is a bigger structure that people assume. In that bigger structure ,we look at a very specific part. We looked at the syllable very early on. That"s a little piece of the prosodic hierarchy. One of the objectives is to show that that part is bigger - we just aren"t looking at the whole thing.
