Document Summary
Week 1 l1: introduction to ob methods. These patterns can be modeled to understand, predict & improve individual behaviours and team/organizational performance. Internal validity is present when variation in the independent variable (x) is responsible for variation in a dependent variable (y). Is present if the manipulation of one causes a change in the other. Independent & dependent variables are meaningfully related (empirical relationship: variation in the independent variable precedes variation in the dependent variable (x must happen before y) There is a reasonable causal explanation for the observed relationship and there are no plausible alternative explanations for it. Two types of causal challenges in social science research: causal direction, reverse causal direction: dependent results in independent (y x) instead of (x y) Joint causation: simultaneity means causation is reciprocal. Ex: leadership style may influence subordinate behaviour, and subordinate behaviour may influence leadership style.
